In order to raise funds for the
various projects in hand – SACRED ran two sportsmen’s lunches.
These events were attended by the renowned Sir Geoff Hurst –
hat-trick scoring hero of the 1966 World Cup Final and comedian
John Bishop.
Sir Geoffrey Charles Hurst MBE, born on 8 December
1941 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, played football for West Ham
and England, and is enshrined in the game's history as the only
player to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final. His three
goals came in the 1966 final for England in their 4-2 win over West
Germany at Wembley. Sir Geoff also played for Stoke City, West
Bromwich Albion. and finally Seattle Sounders. Sir Geoff made a
highly interesting and informative speech which included comical
anicdotes about his sporting experiences.
Liverpudlian comedian John Bishop entertained
diners with his stand-up act. John has been a finalist at many of
the major new act competitions, including So You Think You're
Funny, the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Awards, the BBC New Comedy
Awards and the City Life North West Comedian of The Year Award,
which he won. Most recently he was performing at the 2008 Edinburgh
Festival.
The first lunch took place in Milton Keynes on 9th October. The
second was in Leeds on 1st December – where Sir Geoff was joined by
1966 team-mate, Martin Peters. Martin was the
scorer of the second England goal at the historic match, which, as
it was for Sir Geoff, only his 8th match for his country.
These lunches were highly entertaining and enthralling, everyone
that attended had a truly great time. SACRED will be organizing
some more of these successful events – so watch out for more
news!
With increased funds SACRED will be able to help many more
children. If you weren’t able to attend, but wish to support this
charity please visit the Donate section
