School meals scheme

Whilst education was the initial focal point for SACRED it was soon
recognised that a number of children at the schools where we were
providing support, often went the whole day without a single meal.
On further investigation, it was discovered that some of the
children only received a meal once or twice a week and were
completely reliant on the very basic feeding schemes at the various
schools. Recognising that one cannot study on a empty stomach we
embarked on the process in partnership with the school governing
bodies, teachers, parents and the existing River Sands Feeding
Scheme in Diepsloot township, to enhance the various feeding
schemes at the schools.
The idea is that the participating school can grow their own crops
to provide an ongoing sustainable supply of food for the scheme.
This project has involved the ploughing of a field, erecting
fencing , providing basic irrigation and the purchase of seeds.
SACRED will also be installing a mobile kitchen at one of the
schools which has no kitchen facility at all. In exchange for the
technical assistance and support received from the River Sand
Feeding Scheme, for which SACRED are extremely grateful, Grundfos
South Africa has kindly provided the scheme with a new borehole
pump for their irrigation system.
